Curling Hair with No Heat Part II

I already taught you how to curl before.  This is another way.  This was actually the first way I learned how to curl.

Cute na sana, ignore ugly me in the background. Not fishing!

My fascination with curling started when Mia and I got a haircut from our Korean stylist.  After her normal bob, the stylist used her curling iron to twist Mia's thin hair to curl and volumize it.  It was so amazing I attempted to do it for that year's New Year's Eve celebration.  Unfortunately, it wasn't as easy as it looked.  I kept on burning my fingers every time I attempted to twist her hair.  Either the stylist had numb fingers OR I had no clue what I was doing.  It was probably the latter.

As usual, I attempted to look for Youtube videos that could help me.  I started with searching for how to curl with a straightening iron (because this is what I have for my frizzy hair) until I accidentally stumbled on how to curl with no heat.  What a lifesaver!  I didn't want to fry Mia's hair like my hair so this was perfect.  Here's a step by step on how to do it.  If all else fails, check out the Youtube video below.

Things you will need
You don't need a basin with water if your daughter's hair is already damp.  Please make sure the hair is only damp since you'll be using paper.  If it's fresh from the shower, the "curlers" (paper) might tear.  You don't really need scissors if you're not OC with the strips that you make.  You can tear with your hands.

Get some scratch bond paper.  I'm sure you have some from work.  Cut each bond paper into 4 equal rectangles.  Fold each 3 times to make it thick.  If you have thicker scratch paper you don't need to fold it as much.  You can use old magazines, yellowpages, whatever is at home.

Section her hair.  I highly recommend using a pea size (or smaller) drop of gel to strengthen the hold of the curls.  This will make the curls last longer throughout the day.  You can also use mousse or hairspray if you prefer.

Start on one side.  Get a strip of folded paper.  Put a small part of hair, fold into an upside down V to hold the hair together.  Pull it down and twirl up the paper with the hair getting twisted in the outer most part.  The tighter you twist, the curlier it will come out.  If you want loose curls, twist hair gently.  If you plan to make this your hairstyle for a wedding, better twist it tight.  It's okay to look like Goldilocks at the beginning because it will loosen out come reception time.  If you start loose, it'll look like you just didn't brush your hair during the reception.

This takes longer than the other method so always have something to make your daughter not bored.  Mia was reading Little Mermaid while I was doing her hair.

I didn't do tight curls because I just did this hairstyle on a whim, not for a real occassion.    The paper usually reaches until I can't twist anymore.  This time around I ended it midway on her hair.  The more sections you do, the better it will look like too.

This is how it looks like when it's done.  The nice thing about doing this method instead of the curlers is that it's not too bulky.  Another tip would be doing this a night before the event.  It also helps in making the curls last.  I used the real curlers before and did it before Mia slept.  She cried and complained because she couldn't sleep with them.  With this one, she's pretty much adjusted on how to sleep.

The vain don't complain.

Here are some pictures of the finished product.

So adorbs!

Saves you some $$$ from the parlor.  Ploughed back to her college fund.  Hehehe....  Feel free to add a headband or some fancy clips.

If I got confusing somewhere along the way, here's the Youtube video I promised you.

Let me know if you try it out.  I have gotten so many compliments on Mia's hair.  One time, Mia's classmate's mom asked me if this can be done with adult's hair.  Yes, you can.
